Texas death row inmate ends hunger strike
DALLAS - A Texas death row inmate slated for execution this week has given
up a hunger strike he staged to protest prison conditions, officials said on
Tuesday.
Roy Pippin, condemned to die for a drug-related double homicide more than a
decade ago, had refused food since February 19. His execution by lethal
injection is scheduled for Thursday.
"Mr. Pippin began eating again on Monday afternoon. He was visited by a
friend who had purchased a sandwich, a carrot cake and several other snack
items for him to eat, and he did eat them," said Texas Department of
Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.
Hunger strikes sometimes occur on the death row in Texas, which leads the
nation in executions. Death row inmates spend 23 hours a day in solitary
confinement and have no television or work program to occupy their time.
Texas has put 388 prisoners to death since it resumed executions in 1982. It
has executed nine so far in 2007 and has two scheduled for this week alone
including Pippin's.

would appreciate hearing from anyone willing to share some time
with
me. We are locked away at least 23 here a day, 7 days a
week, in isolation/deprivation
cells.
No television,
no direct sunlight,
and very little interaction is possible with our fellow prisoners.
Your reaching out to share life's experiences would
be
a
blessing for me.
I
am 49 years old (DoB 4/30/1955). I have two children ages 28 (my son Charlie)
and
16 (my daughter
Rachele). I enjoy reading and
writing letters where I can share what my life was like, plus get
to hear what
life
was like for people
in
other countries. My conviction
and death sentence occurred in 1995. Since that time I
have
changed in
so many
ways it
is unbelievable.
I
would like to
correspond
with
anyone willing
to reach out a hand in friendship.
It
does not matter what
age, gender, or
race you are. I enjoy it when
I find someone
who
is willing
to
openly share their thoughts and
talk about their life, religious beliefs, political views, or philosophy
and psychology. Really, anything that helps us both to keep
our minds
active
and helps
us
learn from each other.
I
have become an activist
for prisoner's
legal rights
and
to stop
the
abusive warehousing of prisoners in Texas prisons. Over the
years I
have learned a lot about Texas law
and how it applies
or
should
be
applied to death row appeals. I
try to help
the
new prisoners
to learn how
to communicate or
force
communication with their
attorneys and
the courts.
Having someone to correspond
with
helps
break the monotony of this place and allows me a chance to see
other parts of the world through their/your eyes.
I
would appreciate hearing from you and promise to always

Ich würde sehr schätzen, von jemandem zu hören,
der gewillt ist, etwas Zeit mit mir zu verbringen. Wir werden mindestens
23 Stunden täglich eingesperrt, 7 Tage die Woche, in Isolations- /
Entbehrungszellen. Kein Fernsehen, kein direktes Sonnenlicht und wenig
Abwechslung durch unsere Mitgefangenen. Euer Versuch, mit uns die
Erfahrungen des Lebens mitzuteilen, wäre ein großes Geschenk für
mich.
Ich bin 49 Jahre alt (Geburtsdatum 30.04.1955).
Ich habe zwei Kinder im Alter von 28 (mein Sohn Charlie) und 16 (meine
Tochter Rachele). Ich lese gerne und schreibe Briefe, in denen ich
mitteilen kann, wie mein Leben einst aussah und in denen ich höre, wie
das Leben für Menschen in anderen Ländern aussieht. Meine Verurteilung
und die Todesstrafe erfolgten im Jahr 1995. Seither habe ich mich auf so
viele Weise verändert, es ist unglaublich. Ich möchte Kontakt mit
jedem haben, der auf eine Freundschaft aus ist. Das Alter spielt dabei
überhaupt keine Rolle, auch nicht ob männlich oder weiblich oder
welche Rasse Du bist. Mir bringt es Freude, wenn jemand offen seine
Gedanken mitteilen kann und über sein Leben spricht, über Glaube und
Religion, politische Ansichten oder Philosophie und Psychologie reden
kann. Wirklich, einfach alles was uns dabei hilft, unsere Gedanken in
Bewegung zu halten und von einander zu lernen.
Ich bin ein
Beschützer der Rechte für die Gefangenen geworden und setze
mich dafür ein, dass die Lagerhaltung von texanischen Häftlingen in
den Gefängnissen aufhört. In den Jahren habe ich
viel über das texanische Gesetz gelernt und wie man es auf
Todesstrafen-Berufungsverfahren anwendet oder anwenden sollte. Ich
versuche den neuen Häftlingen beizubringen, was sie ihren Anwälten und
den Gerichten schreiben können oder sollten. Jemanden zu haben, mit dem
man sich unterhalten kann bricht die Monotonie ein bisschen auf und gibt
mir die Möglichkeit, andere Teile der Welt durch Ihre/Deine Augen zu
sehen.
Ich würde es sehr schätzen, von Dir zu hören
und ich verspreche, stets prompt zu antworten. Deinen Briefen sehe ich
entgegen und freue mich schon, Dich kennen zu lernen und vielleicht können
wir gute Freunde werden.
